Two arrested after Just Stop Oil spray orange ‘paint’ on Stonehenge monument

TWO people have been arrested after Just Stop Oil (JSO) activists sprayed Stonehenge with orange paint.

The environmental campaign group said the activists had taken action at around noon on Wednesday (June 19) to demand the government “sign up to a legally-binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030”.

The action came the day before thousands are expected to descend on the World Heritage Site to celebrate the Summer Solstice.

Wiltshire Police said they arrested two people following the incident.

“At around noon, we responded to a report that orange paint had been sprayed on some of the stones by two suspects,” a spokesperson said.

“Officers attended the scene and arrested two people on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument.

“Our enquiries are ongoing, and we are working closely with English Heritage.”

JSO said the paint was “made of cornstarch” and would “wash away in the rain”.

“But the urgent need for effective government action to mitigate the catastrophic consequences of climate and ecological crisis will not,” it added.

It is the latest in a number of high-profile acts by the group, including at Wimbledon, at an England Ashes Test match and the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield.
