YOUNG musicians are being invited to get hands-on with one of Salisbury Cathedral’s most impressive treasures thanks to a new initiative.
The PipeUp Scheme launches with a free open day on Saturday, February 14, when aspiring organists and keyboard players aged eight to 19 will have the rare chance to see, hear and even play the cathedral’s renowned Father Willis organ.
The day promises an inspiring introduction to “the king of instruments”, guided by two of the cathedral’s leading musicians – director of music David Halls and assistant director of music John Challenger.
Participants will be encouraged to bring along a short piece of music to try out on the organ themselves, with expert support from David and John.
For family and friends watching below, a large video screen will relay live footage from the organ loft, offering a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse of how the mighty instrument is played.
The PipeUp Open Day is aimed at young people who are curious about the organ, whether they already play piano or keyboard or are simply keen to explore something new.
Previous experience is helpful but not essential, and enthusiasm is very much encouraged.
The PipeUp Scheme itself has been nurturing young organists since 2004.
Funded by the Mrs R P Tindall Charitable Trust, it offers subsidised lessons through a network of trained organ teachers across Wiltshire and Dorset, helping to keep costs down for families.
Over the past 20 years, many participants have gone on to play regularly in parish churches, achieve high-level music qualifications and even become Associates of the Royal College of Organists.
David said: “The cathedral’s PipeUp Scheme enables young musicians to learn the organ and gain experience playing the instrument.
“I am delighted to be involved in this event as it gives me the chance to meet young musicians and do my bit to encourage them to work at and enthuse about ‘the king of instruments’.
“I hope that our young guests will enjoy this opportunity to play the Cathedral organ and take their musical skills and enthusiasms to their own local churches.”
The open day runs from 11am to 2pm. Places can be booked via www.salisburycathedral.org.uk or by emailing co-ordinator John Young at j.young@salcath.co.uk
