Bursaries of up to £1,900 available for eligible young people in Wiltshire

YOUNG people from low-income families across the county are being offered financial support to help them access higher education.

Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation has opened applications for its University Bursary Programme, offering £1,900 per academic year to eligible students aged 17 to 24.

Bursaries can be used to support essential living costs, travel, course-related expenses and books or equipment.

Now in its 17th year, the programme bridges the gap between the maximum student loan available and what families can afford to contribute.

Most recipients report reduced stress and improved ability to focus on their education.

The foundation has supported hundreds of young people since launching in 2008, and last year alone, 79 students received bursaries totalling £400,000.

According to the National Student Accommodation Survey 2025, average student rent in the UK now stands at £563 per month, with 36% of students considering dropping out due to costs.

The National Student Money Survey 2025 also found maintenance loans typically fall short of covering living expenses by around £502 per month.

The programme is open to young people who meet the criteria, including those from households receiving two elements of Universal Credit or those in the care of Wiltshire Council or Swindon Borough Council.

Wiltshire & Swindon Community Foundation grants manager Nicola Hillier said: “These bursaries provide essential financial support at a time when many young people are questioning whether higher education is affordable.

“By easing financial pressure, we can help students focus on their studies and pursue the courses they are passionate about.

“We would encourage all eligible young people to apply. If you have any questions about the application process or your eligibility, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, our grants team is happy to offer guidance and support with your application.”

Applications for the University Bursary Programme close at 5pm on Friday, April 10.
