Salisbury Cathedral to screen classic Phantom of the Opera movie next month

THE gothic grandness of Salisbury Cathedral will provide the perfect backdrop for a screening of the classic silent film version of Phantom of the Opera next month.

And on October 5, the 1925 film, starring Lon Chaney, will be shown on a big screen, while organist Jonathan Hope provides a live improvised soundtrack.

“The film has gained a large following over the years and is known as one of the benchmark films of the horror genre, still retaining its ability to scare, after nearly 100 years,” a spokesperson said.

“But what makes this screening of the film so spectacular will be the unique live organ accompaniment on the famous Willis organ from Jonathan Hope, which will fill the gothic surroundings of the Cathedral.”

Jonathan is assistant director of music at Gloucester Cathedral and in between his cathedral work and international solo career, he has built a reputation for creating improvised movie accompaniments.

“The evening is set to be the perfect night for any horror film enthusiast or anyone wanting to hear the impressive Cathedral organ in all its glory,” the spokesperson added.

Tickets for the screening are available via www.salisburycathedral.org.uk, or on 01722 555 120.
