Salisbury Cathedral’s director of music to join College of Canons – marking 40 years at the cathedral

SALISBURY Cathedral’s director of music, David Halls, is set to be installed into the College of Canons at the Cathedral.

David was invited to join the college by the Bishop of Salisbury, the Right Reverend Stephen Lake.

He will be one of seven new canons, including five non-residentiary ordained canons and two lay canons from the wider cathedral community, joining the college at the upcoming evensong service on Thursday (October 9).

The College of Canons is part of the cathedral’s extended family and meets twice a year to provide feedback on policy decisions made by Chapter, the cathedral’s governing body, and on Cathedral activities.

As the cathedral’s director of music, David Halls, will take his place in the Gillingham Minor stall in the Cathedral Quire.

David marks forty years at Salisbury Cathedral this year. He arrived as an assistant organist in 1985 and was appointed director of music in 2005.

In addition to his daily duties in the cathedral, he has toured with the cathedral choir and has appeared as conductor, accompanist and soloist for many concerts and recordings. He is also conductor of the Salisbury Musical Society and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra.

Three Rural Deans from the diocese will also be installed into the College of Canons at the same service.

The Revd Sarah Hillman takes the Dorchester stall. She has been incumbent of the Puddletown benefice in Dorset since 2011 and is Rural Dean of Dorchester.

Following gaining a theology degree, Sarah worked in teaching, for churches and at the Church Times newspaper, before being ordained in 2003.

The Revd Jo Haine is Rural Dean of Weymouth and Portland, and Team Vicar in the parish of Radipole and Melcombe Regis with Chickerell.

She will take the Weymouth stall in the Quire. Before ordination, Jo worked as a registered Mental Health Nurse for over a decade.

Her work in the diocese includes developing responses to social need, including ministry to asylum seekers and those living in areas of deprivation.

The Revd Richard Curtis takes up the Trowbridge stall. Richard is Rector of the Cannings and Redhorn Team and also recently was appointed Rural Dean of Devizes.

He has been part of the Diocese for eight years and chairs the Diocesan Advisory Committee.

The other new canons are:

The Revd Philip Bromiley takes the Chisenbury and Chute stall. Philip has served in the Diocese of Salisbury since 2001, as associate priest in Calne, Rector of the Oldbury benefice and team rector of The Avon River Team.

He is currently an Associate Director of Ordinands and Bishop’s Advisor to Ecumenism in Wiltshire.

David French takes his place in the Preston stall. He is a member of the Cathedral Chapter, its body of trustees, and has a wealth of experience in the charity sector, including with The Children’s Society.

He has been CEO of Relate, the Commonwealth Institute and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, a Foreign Office agency working internationally.

The Venerable Louise Ellis is Archdeacon of Wiltshire and will take her place in the Ogborne stall. Louise was formerly vicar of Holy Angels Lilliput in Poole and diocesan vocations coordinator, before being appointed archdeacon in May this year.

She is a member of the Diocesan Board of Education and a member of coastal learning partnership.
