Salisbury Racecourse: preview and tips for Saturday’s six-race evening card

THE summer of racing at Salisbury continues this weekend with a six-race card on Saturday evening (July 12).

The action gets underway at 5.40pm as a field of five take on an apprentice handicap in class six before coming to a close at 8.20pm a mile and a half handicap, also in class six.

The experts at Betano – who offer the latest horse racing betting – have run the rule over the Salisbury card and below is a full preview of Saturday’s meeting.

Up first on Saturday is a class six apprentice handicap held over the six furlong trip (5.40pm).

Dual course and distance winner Silent Flame is the selection in the opener, back with blinkers on after flopping at Newbury last time out and the re-fitting of the head gear should spark Rodd Millman’s runner back into life.

Race two of the evening (6.15pm) sees another field of five head to the start for the class two novice stakes.

The Clive Cox-trained A Bit Of Spirit looks the way to go here, coming from a family of Group 1 winners and was a winner himself on debut at Newbury 30 days ago, so he looks a promising prospect indeed.

Shahik, a 120,000 Guineas buy as a yearling, rates the next best from a solid stable that has a good record with debutant juveniles in George Boughey.

Nine runners will head to post for the class four novice stakes over six furlongs to mark race three on the Salisbury card (6.45pm).

Silent Storm, hailing from the Charlie Hills yard, is best judged on his debut form at Newbury rather than the fifth at Windsor last time out, so repeating that debut form should see him go close here.

Tardaff made a poor debut in June but left that well behind when finishing second at Newmarket just over a fortnight ago and rates as the main danger.

A small field of four will tackle the mile and a furlong fillies’ handicap, race four of the evening (7.20pm) and preference heads the way of Soul Dance for trainer Andrew Balding is the class of the field, a winner at Nottingham who was also second at this track 17 days ago, so should take all the beating.

The penultimate race of the evening (7.50) is a class four handicap over the mile-and-a-half trip.

The Jamie Osborne-trained Crystal Mariner is worth siding with here, well handicapped on form despite a pair of ninths on the all-weather in his last two runs.

Finally, the card comes to a close at 8.20pm as a field of five take on the one mile and four furlong handicap in class six.

Preference in the finale heads the way of Shabu Shabu for trainer James Ferguson, a disappointing fourth last time out, but his prior form was strong – including a second at Leicester – and this step up in trip should suit.
