Fantastic fungi on the agenda at Salisbury talk

THE magical world of fungi will be explored during a talk in Salisbury next week.

On Wednesday (October 21) at St Francis Church, in Beatrice Road, Marcus Ward from Wild New Forest will be the speaker at Sarum u3a with a talk entitled Fungi in the New Forest.

“Marcus has educated and enthralled us so well over the last few years most notably with his talk on Pine Martins,” a spokesperson said.

“Autumn in the New Forest reveals one of its most magical secrets: the extraordinary world of fungi. With over 2,700 recorded species, this ancient landscape is one of the richest places in Britain to spot mushrooms, toadstools, and other weird and wonderful fungi.

You’ll find them peeking through leaf litter, clinging to dead wood, or nestled in damp glades – a reminder of how much life depends on what’s hidden beneath our feet.”

They said fungi are vital to the health of the New Forest, decomposing dead organic material, recycling nutrients, and forming underground partnerships with tree roots, allowing plants to absorb water and minerals.

“Some species are centuries old and found nowhere else,” the spokesperson added.

“Because fungi are so essential – and because many are rare or sensitive to disturbance – foraging is strongly discouraged. Instead, enjoy them with your eyes and camera, not your hands. Educational forays are permitted by licence only and should always follow the New Forest Code.”

Members and guests are welcome to attend the u3a meeting, which will start at 10am with coffee. Guests are invited to join Sarum u3a after two visits.
