More road closures in Salisbury as improvement work continues

TWO busy Salisbury routes will be closed for improvement works as part of a £9 million scheme.

Between August 5 and 8, Fisherton Street will be closed to traffic overnight as part of the Fisherton Gateway improvements.

A new priority traffic system will be part of the work, along with the built-out on Summerlock Bridge/Water lane, aiming to make pedestrian travel into the city centre easier, with closures in place from 7pm to 6am.

To support local takeaways and restaurants, takeaway delivery drivers will be able to park in the area behind City Hall and walk through to Fisherton Street to collect orders. Delivery drivers can access the area via Avon Approach and the A36.

During the closure, Central Car Park and The Maltings Car Park will remain open for free parking between 6pm and 8am for all users of Fisherton Street.

North Street will become two-way, permitting vehicles to exit via South Street, while egress via Fisherton Street is not permitted.

Fisherton Street will also be closed to traffic overnight for resurfacing works between August 12 and 23.

It is proposed similar arrangements for takeaway delivery drivers will be in place during this period.

“This is a significant stage as we near completion of this improvement scheme and the work has been scheduled to minimise disruption as much as possible,” a Wiltshire Council spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Churchfields Road will be closed overnight from August 8 to 9 as part of the train station forecourt improvement scheme.

This closure will be between 8pm and 5am to allow for the removal of the existing central traffic island opposite 15 and 16 Churchfields Road.

“This work forms part of the on-going enhancement scheme to the station forecourt which will include new pedestrian and cycle access to the station from Churchfields Road and a new crossing point at Churchfields Road,” the spokesperson added.

“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by the work and will be seeking to ensure that any disturbance is kept to a minimum.”

HGV access will not be possible to the industrial estate while the work takes place.

Any business requiring ‘critical’ access to the industrial estate during hours of the closure should email SalisburyStationForecourt@milestoneinfra.co.uk.

Cllr Nick Holder, cabinet member for highways, Street Scene and flooding, said: “One of our Business Plan priorities is to have vibrant well-connected communities and we are well on our way to achieving this in Salisbury.

“We would like to thank businesses and residents for their patience and continued co-operation in delivering these important schemes for Salisbury.”
