Salisbury Cathedral plays starring role in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentleman

SALISBURY Cathedral played a starring role in the new series of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series, The Gentleman.

City viewers of the show might have spotted the cathedral as it provided the backdrop for scenes in episode two of the second series of the hit programme.

A cathedral spokesperson said director Ritchie and the crew were at the venue last summer, including Theo James and Giancarlo Esposito.

“It was a pleasure to work alongside Netflix to help see through their vision for this episode, and we hope you enjoyed seeing the cathedral in the series,” they said.

“Don’t worry, no Magna Carta or paintings were harmed in the making of the show.”

The Gentlemen is a black comedy crime drama created by Guy Ritchie for Netflix, a spin-off of his 2019 film of the same name.

It stars Theo James in the lead role and premiered on March 7, 2024, with the second series premiering on September 3, and the hit show has already been commissioned for a third series.

James plays Edward “Eddie” Horniman, the 13th Duke of Halstead and a former British Army captain who served as a United Nations peacekeeping officer, alongside Kaya Scodelario as Susan “Susie” Glass, the daughter of and representative for Bobby Glass’ criminal syndicate while he is in prison.

Glass maintains a large-scale cannabis grow-op on the Halstead Manor and serves as Edward’s advisor in professional criminal endeavors, while her front occupation is masquerading as an antiques dealer.

Daniel Ings stars as Lord Frederick “Freddy” Horniman, Eddie’s unreliable, cocaine-addicted older brother who is indebted to the Scouse crime family, while Joely Richardson is Sabrina Horniman, the Dowager Duchess of Halstead and mother of Freddy, Eddie, and Charly.

Film legend Ray Winstone also appears, as Robert “Bobby” Glass, Susie’s father and the incarcerated head of a cannabis empire that uses the grounds of Halstead Manor as part of its operation.

And in the second series, Hugh Bonneville portrays Lord Richard Hawthorne, a corrupt politician who collaborates with Eddie to legalize marijuana.

It is not the first time Salisbury Cathedral and Cathedral Close have appeared on screen.

Recent roles for the locations include in a 2023 BBC production of Great Expectations, historical drama The Spanish Princess in 2019, and Sense and Sensibility in 1995, the Oscar-nominated adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic, which featured Cathedral Close prominently.
