Ten reasons Salisbury Cathedral is this summer’s must-visit

SALISBURY Cathedral has once again been ranked among the top 10% of attractions worldwide on Tripadvisor, welcoming more than 250,000 visitors each year.

Now, as summer arrives, the cathedral is highlighting ten reasons why it remains one of the city’s most popular days out for both tourists and local families.

At the top of the list is its most famous landmark – the tallest medieval spire in Britain, rising 123 metres above the 80-acre Cathedral Close, the largest of its kind in the country.

Visitors are also encouraged to explore the Cloisters where cool shaded walkways offer a peaceful escape and changing views of the building throughout the day.

New for this year is a specialist Magna Carta Tour, offering a deeper look into the creation of one of the world’s most important constitutional documents and its ongoing influence on human rights.

A range of other guided tours are also available, including Tower Tours with panoramic views of Salisbury, Stonemasons Tours, textile-focused visits and historical graffiti tours.

Wildlife remains a summer highlight, with four peregrine falcon chicks recently hatching in the cathedral tower. RSPB volunteers are on hand to help visitors spot them in flight.

For a more relaxed pace, the Bell Tower Tearooms offer afternoon tea and ice cream with views across the Cathedral Close.

This year’s summer exhibition, Joyful Noise, explores the relationship between music, sound and creativity through art, sculpture and installation.

Families can also take part in craft activities or follow a Sound Trail around the Close.

A recent conservation project has also restored the William Morris and Burne-Jones Angels Window to full display.

Tickets are available via Salisbury Cathedral website, with free entry for residents in SP1–SP5 with proof of address.
