Salisbury Charter Fair returns for four days of fun

ENTERTAINMENT, food and traditional fairground fun are promised at the Salisbury Charter Fair, which returns next month.

The fair will be open from Sunday, October 18, to Wednesday, October 21, kicking off at 2pm on the first day with the traditional civic parade through Salisbury Market Place.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the festivities from 2pm to 9pm that day, and from 11am to 10pm Monday to Wednesday.

“Expect a mix of much-loved fairground classics and more thrilling attractions throughout the four-day event. Fairground favourites including the carousel, dodgems and waltzer will sit alongside high-energy rides such as Super Star and Star Flyer, keeping both families and thrill-seekers entertained,” a spokesperson said.

“There will be plenty more to discover, with fairground games such as hook-a-duck and hoopla, a mini arcade, and a tempting selection of sweet treats and street food on offer.”

The fair has been part of Salisbury’s story for almost 800 years and comes ahead of the city marking eight centuries since receiving its Royal Charter, in 2027.

“Its origins can be traced back to 1227, when King Henry III granted a charter to the Bishop of Salisbury to hold a fair on the third Monday in October,” the spokesperson went on.

“Centuries later, the event continues to bring people into the city and remains a treasured annual tradition.”

The fair is set to play a role in next year’s Salisbury 800 celebrations, with a host of events planned to mark the anniversary.
