Scout legend celebrated for 60 years of supporting young people

A SCOUT volunteer who completed 60 impressive years of service was one of four volunteers commended for their hard work to support the activities and development of their younger counterparts.

The Scout headquarters at Dennis Marsh House in Westminster Road were packed to the rafters as volunteers and members gathered for the Scouting Awards, presented by the district lead volunteer Ian Jack and the Salisbury Mayor councillor John Wells at the group’s annual general meeting (AGM).

The award winners included Gerald Russell, formerly with the 10th Salisbury and latterly Winterslow – who also served two terms as district commissioner- as he marked 60 impressive years of service.

Matthew King, group leader at 6th Salisbury Air Scout Group, was also received an award after completing five years of service alongside team member at 3rd Salisbury Sea Scouts, Hugh Sturdy, who marked 15 years of service and Matthew Price – a cub section team member at the 1st Boscombe Down Scout Group – who received his wood badge after completing his leader training.

Cllr Wells said: “I was delighted to be asked to present some special long service awards at the Salisbury and South Wilts District Scouts AGM this month.

“In a hall packed with adults dedicated to working with young people, I presented several well-deserved long service awards.

“The spirit and commitment of this charitably funded organisation are epitomised by Gerald Russell, who received recognition for 60 years of service.

“Generations of young people have benefited from this great organisation. Long may it last!”
