Month of milestones for local sea cadets

NOVEMBER proved to be an exceptionally busy and rewarding month for the Salisbury Sea Cadets, with members from across the unit taking part in community events, training courses and high-profile visits.

The month began on the water at Spinnaker Sailing Club in the New Forest where cadets aged ten to 18 gained Royal Yachting Association qualifications in powerboating and sailing.

Just days later, more than 60 Sea Cadets, Royal Marine Cadets, Junior Cadets and Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers took part in Salisbury’s Remembrance.

Marching alongside regular and reserve forces, the unit joined the city in honouring those who have served.

S/Lt George Thompson RNR, detachment commander of the Royal Marines Cadets, said the occasion was “an honour”, adding that the cadets’ presence “shows our commitment to supporting the armed forces community and representing the Sea Cadet Corps with pride”.

Over the Remembrance weekend, LC Charlie served as the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Wiltshire, supporting commemorations in Imber and Trowbridge.

Training continued throughout November, including Autumn Rowing Courses on the River Avon, where cadets earned national qualifications despite challenging weather.

On November 17, the unit welcomed MSSC Chief Executive Guy Holloway and Southern Area Officer Commander David Grindel RN, who observed activities ranging from STEM and leadership to seamanship and maritime careers.

Several cadets also achieved personal milestones, including new peer educators, a British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor and two newly promoted Petty Officer Cadets.

As the month closed, cadets completed the final Multi-Activity Training Course of the year, gaining qualifications in seamanship and first aid.
