Pub conducts paranormal probe after strange occurrences

WHEN the doors of the historic New Inn in Amesbury closed for the night earlier this month, the pub was far from quiet.

Instead of last orders and lock-up, the centuries-old Grade II listed building played host to a paranormal investigation that stretched into the early hours – and left its new landlords intrigued rather than unnerved.

Landlord Nate Saitch says the idea came about after interest from the paranormal community found its way to the pub’s social media.

“The Fear Frequency approached us through our social media,” he explained. “They had heard many stories about strange goings-on at the New Inn, both from published articles and first-hand accounts from customers and former tenants.

“In fact, they weren’t the first to ask. They were the second investigation team to contact us; the first team couldn’t match dates with us in the diary.”

The investigation took place after closing time on Sunday, December 6, with the team remaining on site until around 4am.

Landlord Nate (far right) is on the edge of his seat.

With the pub empty and lights low, the atmosphere was set for what would turn out to be a memorable night.

Among the standout moments for Nate and his team was an unexpected revelation about one of the investigators.

“One of the most exciting moments was a discovery about the skeptical cameraman, Brandon,” said Nate.

“During the investigation, it emerged that he had psychic abilities as a child, which came as a real surprise.”

There was also a moment that made everyone stop in their tracks: “There was also a loud crash heard on the stairs, even though the upstairs area was completely empty at the time.”

Without revealing everything uncovered during the investigation, Nate admits the night delivered more than they anticipated.

“The investigation produced some very interesting results. We uncovered some unexpected information, and I was also warned not to dig into a blocked-up tunnel in the cellar.”

What’s that noise?!

Josh Fear of Fear Frequency, the team behind the investigation, says the New Inn had long been on their radar.

He said: “I chose The New Inn after hearing multiple reports of unexplained activity from both staff and locals, including unusual noises, footsteps, and things being heard or felt when no one else was around.

“The history of the pub was a big part of the appeal. Knowing how long it’s been part of the local community and how many people have passed through over the years makes it a fascinating place to investigate, as older buildings often seem to hold onto energy or memories from the past.”

A personal connection added weight to those stories: “I also have a friend who previously lived there and experienced things turning on by themselves, unexplained footsteps, and other activity, which added to my interest.”

During the night, the team experienced “several moments that couldn’t be easily explained,” including unexplained sounds, flickering lights and equipment such as the REM Pod reacting with no obvious cause.

One incident echoed what Nate had heard earlier. “One of the most interesting moments was a loud crashing sound that came directly from upstairs while everyone was downstairs at the opposite end of the building,” Josh said.

Despite the late night and eerie moments, the experience left a positive impression. “Yes, definitely,” Nate said when asked if he would host another investigation.

“It was a very positive experience, and everything that happened felt friendly and positive in nature.”

For a pub steeped in history, it seems the New Inn may still have a few stories left to tell, whether from the past, the present, or somewhere in between.
