Dream debut as police officer and trusty steed win silver in London

A POLICE officer has ridden her way to a podium finish on one of the world’s biggest equestrian stages after an unforgettable performance at the London International Horse Show 2025.

PC Laura Hughes represented Wiltshire Police in the prestigious Services Championship class on Thursday, December 18, riding her horse Paul in what was their debut appearance at the event.

The pair had only stepped up from reserve three months earlier and faced an intense race against time to get competition ready.

Training was squeezed around demanding work schedules, fitness sessions were relentless, sleep was scarce and nerves were high.

The pair produced a flawless clear round and posted the second-fastest time in the 1.10m class – an outcome Laura described as “a dream come true”.

To their amazement, it secured them second place after the first round and a spot on the podium.

The jump-off proved more challenging, with Paul opting for speed over precision, but the duo still went on to tackle their first-ever 1.20m course – another milestone in an already extraordinary evening.

Laura said she was “beyond proud” of what they achieved, especially given they arrived in London with no expectations other than hoping for a good photo to remember the occasion.

Instead, they left with silver medals, standout performances and memories that will last a lifetime.

With confidence high and ambitions growing, Laura now has her sights set on qualifying again next year, and returning bigger and better.
