Police catch hundreds of speeding drivers

POLICE recorded more than 1,000 speeding offences across the county last month when officers stepped up enforcement.

Figures released by the force show that 1,081 vehicles were caught exceeding the speed limit, as Speed Enforcement Officers carried out targeted checks to improve road safety.

Most motorists were dealt with through education rather than punishment.

A total of 973 drivers were offered the opportunity to attend a Speed Awareness Course, aimed at helping people better understand the risks of speeding and encouraging safer driving habits.

However, enforcement action was taken where appropriate.

In 101 cases, drivers received fixed penalties, including fines and points on their driving licences.

A further seven motorists are due to appear in court, where more serious penalties could be imposed.

Police say the figures highlight both the scale of the problem and the importance of continued enforcement, particularly during busy periods when roads are more congested and the risk of collisions can increase.

Speeding is a contributing factor in many serious and fatal road traffic collisions, reducing reaction times and increasing the severity of injuries when crashes occur.

Officers regularly remind drivers that even small increases over the speed limit can have devastating consequences.

Wiltshire Police also thanked the many motorists who did comply with speed limits throughout December, stressing that responsible driving plays a key role in protecting communities, pedestrians and other road users.

Enforcement activity will continue throughout the year with police urging drivers to slow down, stay alert and help make Wiltshire’s roads safer for everyone.
