A PACKED Salisbury Rugby Club welcomed one of its own last week as Harlequins and England rugby star Cadan Murley returned to his roots for a special evening in support of Salisbury Hospice Charity.
The event, titled Behind the Try Line, marked the official launch of the hospice’s sponsored walk campaign, The Big Try, and brought together 75 rugby fans for an evening celebrating community, connection and the shared values at the heart of the sport.
Interviewed by Gareth Robertson, Cadan spoke openly about his journey from junior rugby at Salisbury RFC to the professional game with Harlequins and, ultimately, pulling on an England shirt.
He offered an honest insight into the discipline, determination and resilience required to compete at the highest level.
Following the interview, the audience was invited to ask questions, prompting thoughtful reflections on training, teamwork and self-belief.

His emphasis on continual improvement struck a chord, particularly with younger players in attendance, many of whom left visibly inspired.
Mental health was a recurring theme throughout the evening.
Cadan highlighted the importance of friendship and support, explaining how teammates at every stage of his career have helped him navigate personal challenges.
His message of openness and connection resonated strongly with the crowd.
That link between physical activity and mental wellbeing made The Big Try a natural cause for Cadan to champion.
The upcoming event aims to bring people together, encourage movement and spark meaningful conversations, all while supporting a vital local charity.
The evening also featured a surprise video appearance from Cadan’s Harlequins teammate Marcus Smith, who offered his backing for the campaign.
Fans were also able to purchase rugby balls signed by Cadan, raising additional funds for the hospice.

Organisers thanked everyone who attended, Gareth Robertson for his engaging hosting, and Cadan for giving his time to support Salisbury Hospice.
The Big Try will see participants take on an eight-mile walk through Salisbury’s iconic landscapes, complete with a free pasty and pint pitstop at Salisbury Rugby Club and live Six Nations screenings at City Hall, all in aid of providing comfort, dignity and personalised care when it is needed most.
