IMMIGRATION officers and police have arrested a male working at a Salisbury fish and chip shop.

The joint operation was conducted on Monday (February 9) when officers visited several premises in the city centre.

Salisbury Police say the focus was to prevent exploitation of staff by ensuring they were working legitimately and that appropriate health and safety measures were in place.

One male, working at Charlie’s Fish and Chip shop, was arrested by Immigration Enforcement Officers on suspicion of working without an appropriate visa.

He has been bailed to attend court at a later date. If found guilty of working illegally, the business could also face a significant fine.

Insp Tina Osborn said: “We work closely with our colleagues from Immigration Enforcement as they carry out their work to help support safe and appropriate working conditions and prevent illegal working.

“These offences are often closely linked to organised crime through modern day slavery and human trafficking. Such operations help to tackle the exploitation of vulnerable people and associated criminality. “
