A303 not expected to clear until afternoon following HGV crash

DRIVERS face hours more disruption on the A303 near Chicklade after a serious crash forced the eastbound carriageway to close this morning.

As previously reported, there were major tailbacks after a collision involving two HGVs near the Somerset-Wiltshire border.

The A303 remains closed eastbound between the B3081 near Bourton and the A350 near Chicklade.

National Highways confirmed the incident is located between the A371 and the junction with the A350 and involves a vehicle crossing the central reservation.

The closure is currently active, and traffic is not expected to return to normal until between 2.30pm and 2.45pm today (February 25).

Wiltshire Police confirmed the incident at 7.36am. At 7.42am, the force said nobody had been seriously injured and no arrests have been made.

An eyewitness who passed the scene said one of the vehicles involved was a lorry carrying hay, which had crashed and was blocking both carriageways near Willoughby Hedge services.

Police remain in attendance and are urging motorists to seek alternative routes.

A spokesperson said: “Please be aware of closures in place following a road traffic collision involving two HGVs on the A303 at Chicklade.

“Traffic is being diverted from the B3095 at Mere. There are no reported serious injuries or arrests.

“Drivers should consider alternative routes and expect delays in the area.”

National Highways has advised motorists to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs. The recommended route remains:

  • Leave the A303 at Leigh Common and travel eastbound on the B3081.
  • Follow the B3081 for approximately nine miles to the A350, then rejoin the A303 eastbound.
