Helping adults read: Volunteers take literacy message to Salisbury streets

TWO volunteers helping adults learn to read met members of the public in Salisbury ahead of this year’s World Book Day celebrations.

Representatives from Read Easy South & East Wiltshire were out in the city speaking with residents about the life-changing impact of improving reading skills and how people can get involved.

The group is part of the national charity Read Easy UK, which supports adults who struggle with reading by providing free, confidential one-to-one coaching from trained volunteers.

During the session, publicity organiser Dickie Bellringer and networker Nicky Cooper spoke to passers-by about the charity’s work and encouraged anyone interested in volunteering or seeking help to find out more.

Read Easy’s vision is for all adults in the UK to have the literacy skills they need to realise their potential to live life to the full.

Its mission is to harness the initiative, energy, skills and experience of volunteers, and equip them to provide coaching for adults who want to improve their reading.

Coach and learner meet twice a week at approved venues, or online, to work for just half an hour at a time through a structured, phonics-based reading programme.

The charity says the flexible sessions help learners gradually build confidence and independence, often transforming their everyday lives – from reading letters and forms to helping children with homework.

The event was aimed at raising awareness and encouraging more people to either seek support or volunteer their time.
