A SALISBURY neighbourhood could be in line for a major £20 million boost – with residents set to take the lead on how the money is spent.
Bemerton has been selected for the government’s Pride in Place programme, a long-term initiative designed to hand power directly to communities to shape their future.
The scheme will see the creation of an independent Neighbourhood Board, bringing together residents, businesses, community groups and organisations to develop a vision for the area over the next decade.
At the heart of the plans is a search for a local figure to take on the key role of independent chair – helping to guide decisions on how the funding is used.
The programme, which runs over ten years, aims to give communities control over investment to improve local spaces, support grassroots projects and drive regeneration from within.
Bemerton has been chosen as one of several areas across the UK to benefit, with the selection recognising both its strong community spirit and the potential for locally-led change.
The successful chair will be responsible for bringing together voices from across the neighbourhood, helping to shape a long-term plan and ensuring funding reflects what matters most to local people.
The role is voluntary, with expenses covered, and organisers say they are looking for someone with a strong connection to the area and a passion for community-led change.
Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for economic development, regeneration and assets Cllr Helen Belcher said: “This programme is all about empowering the people of Bemerton to decide what matters most for their neighbourhood.
“The new Neighbourhood Board will bring together the insight, energy and ambitions of local residents, and the Chair will play a vital role in guiding that shared vision.
“We’re excited to welcome someone who is passionate about the community and committed to helping it thrive for many years to come.”
Applications for the chair position are now open, with people asked to complete an online form by midnight Thursday, May 7.
Forms can be requested by emailing prideinplace@wiltshire.gov.uk or hard copies can be collected from Wiltshire Council in Bourne Hill or Salisbury City Council in The Guildhall.
