A MAJOR new employment scheme aimed at helping people into work has been given the green light bringing more than £10 million of government funding into the county.
Wiltshire Council has approved plans to deliver £10.4 million from the Department for Work and Pensions to roll out the Connect to Work programme.
The initiative is designed to support residents who face barriers to employment, including those with health conditions, disabilities or complex personal circumstances.
Running until 2030, the scheme will offer tailored, one-to-one support to help people find and stay in work.
This includes matching individuals with suitable jobs, working with employers to make roles more accessible and providing ongoing support once someone is in employment.
As part of the programme, £2.2 million has been awarded to The Shaw Trust, which will deliver specialist support through its Individual Placement Support service.
A key focus will be helping employers create more inclusive workplaces, from adapting roles to recognising the skills and potential that individuals bring.
The programme will also work closely with local health, care and community services, ensuring people receive the wider support they need alongside employment help.
Importantly, the scheme is fully funded through a government grant, meaning there is no cost to the council’s core budget.
Cabinet member for children’s services, SEND, education and skills Cllr Jon Hubbard said: “Connect to Work is about helping people who want to work but face real barriers to do so.
“This programme offers personalised, practical support that recognises people’s strengths and works alongside employers to create meaningful, sustainable job opportunities.
“It’s a very positive step for residents, businesses and our wider communities. We look forward to receiving referrals from external partners as soon as possible.”
The scheme forms part of the government’s wider “Get Britain Working” plans and is expected to support thousands of people across the region in the coming years.
