Dog owners urged to share stories in national survey

FROM muddy countryside walks and sofa cuddles to chewed slippers and endless games of fetch, dog owners across the South West are being invited to share what life with their four-legged companions is really like.

Dogs Trust has launched its National Dog Survey 2026 and is encouraging people from across the region to take part, whether they own a dog, dream of owning one or simply enjoy seeing them out and about.

The charity, which has rehoming centres in Salisbury and Ilfracombe, said the survey has become one of the largest studies of dog ownership in the UK.

More than 1.4 million people have taken part since it launched five years ago.

The findings have already helped shape major changes for dog owners.

Previous surveys contributed to the creation of dog food banks, the launch of a free Behaviour Support Line and highlighted the challenges faced by renters with pets.

Dogs Trust said this work helped inform changes in the Renters’ Rights Act, which came into force earlier this year.

Last year’s survey revealed just how important dogs are in people’s lives.

Four out of five owners described their dog as their best friend, while 95% said having a dog benefits their mental health.

The average owner also spends more than an hour a day walking their pet.

Chief executive of Dogs Trust Owen Sharp said: “Being a dog owner means you are part of a wonderful community, and for our fifth annual National Dog Survey, we want to bring all of these experiences together.

“This year, we’re looking to dig deeper into the incredible commitment of owners and explore what our dogs mean to us.

“And it isn’t just dog owners we want to hear from. Whether you’ve always wanted a dog, are unsure if one fits your lifestyle, or simply prefer to admire them from afar, we want to hear from you.

“We’re calling on the people of the South West – don’t be left out!”

The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete and is open until June 30 at www.dogstrust.org.uk/NDS
