RINGWOOD care home resident Ken was bowled over when he returned to the green for the first time in a decade.

Ken, who lives at Care South-run St Ives House, visited Bournemouth Bowling Club in Meyrick Park to revive a hobby from years ago.

Previously a member of Braeside Bowling Club in Ringwood, Ken was given the chance to try out his skills once again alongside some fellow residents from St Ives House, and from Alexandra House in Parkstone and Wickmeads in Tuckton.

The event was organised to celebrate Care South’s sponsorship of the club’s scoreboards.

Residents were supported by Phil Newman, president of Bournemouth Bowling Club, alongside Liz, club treasurer and Ladies Captain, and club member Chris.

“It was marvellous. I haven’t played in about 10 years, so it was very good. The weather and the people were also good,” said Ken.

Anne, who lives at Alexandra House, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed it. We had lots of help from the club. We had lovely weather, so it was a beautiful spot to do some bowling.”

All residents attending were given the chance to have a go, with some taking advantage of the club’s specially adapted ‘Bowls Royce’ wheelchairs, which can be used on the bowling green.

Charlotte Mitchell, resident activities and lifestyle lead at Care South, added: “The residents had such a brilliant time chatting, swapping top tips and watching everyone have a go at Bournemouth Bowling Club. It was great for Ken and the other residents to reconnect with a familiar pastime, while also being able to introduce the sport to others that hadn’t had the chance to try it before.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the team at Bournemouth Bowling Club for giving everyone such a warm welcome and making the day so enjoyable.”

Club president Phil said: “It was lovely to see that Ken has retained his talent for bowling despite a long break. He was able to advise some of the other residents who were new to bowling about their technique, and they achieved some fantastic scores as a result.

“We’re always looking for new talented players and we’d warmly welcome any of the Care South residents to come back again for a re-match.”
