Business leaders face the dock for hospice fundraiser

FIVE familiar faces from Salisbury’s business community will find themselves on the wrong side of the law this week all in the name of charity.

In one of Salisbury Hospice Charity’s best-loved annual fundraising events, professionals will be dramatically “arrested”, put on mock trial and locked up at the Guildhall on Friday (June 12), as part of the charity’s popular Jail & Bail fundraiser.

But while the crimes may be entirely fictional – including “banter trafficking”, “strategic overthinking” and “aggravated facilitation of professional connections” – the cause behind the fun is deeply serious.

This year’s “infamous five” have each been challenged to raise £999 in bail money to secure their freedom, with every pound helping Salisbury Hospice provide specialist palliative and end-of-life care for people across the community.

Among those facing mock justice are Business Through Referrals chair Karen Deighton, accountant Shirley Hollis from Xeinadin, Fawcetts’ Chris Savage, Serco’s Carol Musgrove and Steele Rose operations manager Dan client director Wilson.

Their day in “court” will begin with dramatic arrests by Wiltshire Police, while Salisbury’s town crier, Jef Hutchby, publicly announces their alleged offences before they are hauled before Judge Wendy Warwick White at the Guildhall.

After inevitably being found guilty, the jailed fundraisers will spend the afternoon behind bars in a temporary ‘Salisbury Jail House’ – armed only with phones, laptops and determination as they appeal to colleagues, friends and supporters to help raise their bail.

Residents can also expect to spot the prisoners out on “exercise time” around the city centre in full costume, collecting donations and spreading plenty of laughter along the way.

The light-hearted fundraiser has become a much-loved fixture in Salisbury’s charity calendar, combining fun with fundraising for a cause that touches many local families.

Every donation raised will support Salisbury Hospice’s compassionate care for people living with life-limiting illnesses and support for their loved ones.
