DRIVERS across Ludgershall are being warned to stay vigilant after a spate of opportunist thefts targeting cars in the area.
According to Wiltshire Police, a number of recent incidents have involved items being stolen from vehicles, with some believed to have been left unlocked, making them easy targets.
Officers say the crimes highlight how quickly thieves can strike if basic precautions are not taken.
Residents are now being urged to take simple steps that could make all the difference – starting with something as straightforward as locking your car properly.
Police say even leaving a vehicle unattended for a short time, such as while filling up with fuel or parked outside your home, can be enough for opportunist thieves to act.
They are also warning drivers to double-check doors, windows and sunroofs, and to ensure electronic locking has worked before walking away.
Another growing concern is so-called “relay theft”, where criminals use devices to capture signals from keyless entry fobs, even from inside homes, allowing them to unlock and steal vehicles without needing the keys.
To combat this, drivers are being advised to keep keys out of sight and away from doors and consider using signal-blocking pouches.
Police are also reminding motorists to be aware of their surroundings, particularly when parking.
Choosing well-lit, busy areas and avoiding leaving valuables on display can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
In more serious scenarios, officers warn that carjackings can still occur.
Drivers are advised to keep doors locked while in traffic and, if approached or threatened, to prioritise personal safety and contact police immediately.
The message from officers is clear: most of these crimes are preventable.
