Checkmate! Young minds shine at Salisbury Cubs chess event

YOUNG minds were put to the test in Salisbury as dozens of Cub Scouts gathered for a lively district chess competition.

The District Chess Learn & Play event took place at Salisbury Methodist Church, hosted by the 8th Salisbury (Methodist) Scout Group, bringing together 55 Cubs from 12 groups for an afternoon of friendly but focused competition.

While chessboards replaced campfires for the day, the event highlighted the wide range of activities offered through Scouting – far beyond the traditional outdoor pursuits.

Organisers said the contest was about more than winning, giving young people the chance to build problem-solving skills, patience and confidence in a supportive environment.

Players took part in matches lasting up to 15 minutes, earning points for wins, draws and captured pieces, with leaders and volunteers on hand to guide and encourage.

Support from the Rotary Club of Salisbury helped create a welcoming atmosphere, with refreshments provided and certificates awarded to all participants.

At the end of the afternoon, the prestigious John Naish Chess Trophy was presented by Rotary Club president Alan Corkill.

The top players were named as Oliver from 4th, Joseph from Bourne Valley, Tiago from 10th and Jasper from 1st Amesbury.

Organisers praised the enthusiasm and sportsmanship shown by everyone involved, with many young players embracing the challenge of the game.

The event also served as a reminder that Scouting offers a diverse programme, from coding and cooking to creative arts and strategy games, helping young people develop a wide range of life skills.

For those taking part, it was a day of concentration, competition and plenty of fun.
