A HISTORIC Wiltshire pub once pulled back from the brink – with help from a Hollywood star – is set to reopen its doors once again.
The Swan at Enford will welcome customers from Thursday (April 2) after new local investors stepped in to secure its future, ensuring the village’s only pub remains at the heart of the community.
The reopening follows months of uncertainty, during which a team of volunteers kept the 16th-century thatched pub running.
Among them was film star Rupert Everett, whose stint pulling pints captured headlines around the world.
Now, new shareholders Sophie Cooper and Andy Wiggins have taken on the pub after moving to the village last year, determined to keep it alive as a community hub.
They said: “We chose Enford because of the amazing location and its charming rural pub – we didn’t know we were going to meet so many wonderful people and those people were our motivation to buy the pub.”
Andy added: “When the volunteers ran the pub it really changed the dynamic, everyone was happy to work and made the pub a genuine community hub, we couldn’t let that change so we stepped in to keep it owned by locals and focused on being a real community asset”.
The Swan’s story has already attracted national attention, with Rupert Everett – who lives locally – joining the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and famously getting behind the bar.
He has described the pub as the “beating heart of the community” and could soon return to serve customers again, filming schedules permitting.
“I am so excited for the future of The Swan, our pub tradition must be saved,” he said.
The village has since become something of a CAMRA hotspot, with many residents following Everett’s lead.
The Swan has built a reputation for championing local breweries, with expert Steve Stringer, secretary of Salisbury and South Wiltshire CAMRA, overseeing its real ale offering.
With fresh investment, community backing and a touch of star power, The Swan’s next chapter is about to begin.
