A NEW initiative aimed at inspiring the next generation of engineers is being rolled out across Wiltshire, offering girls the chance to earn a civil engineering badge for free.
The scheme is part of a partnership between Girlguiding South West England and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), designed to encourage more young women to consider careers in infrastructure.
Guides and Rangers who complete at least two activities from the challenge will receive the new badge, with tasks designed to bring engineering concepts to life.
These include building bridges from chocolate bars, constructing towers using jelly and tackling simulated emergencies by creating water systems and shelters.
Local units can run the activities themselves, but the programme also connects groups with real-life engineers who volunteer their time to promote STEM careers.

The girls are happy with their badges.
Miranda Housden, regional director for ICE South West, said: “We’re looking for the very best problem solvers to join our profession – people who want to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges.
“Through this programme with Girlguiding, we hope to show girls and young women the meaningful, rewarding impact they can make as engineers.
“Civil engineers are at the heart of creating infrastructure that makes a real difference, and we want them to see themselves in that future.”
The badge has already proved successful elsewhere in the UK, with 15,000 awarded during a pilot scheme.
Feedback has also been strong, with activities rated 4.5 out of five stars by participants.
Surveys suggest the initiative could have a lasting impact, with interest in civil engineering careers rising from 17% before taking part to 83% afterwards.
Chief commissioner for Girlguiding South West England Racheal Tattum said: “We are excited to be working with ICE to empower our young members. This partnership will help girls explore the incredible impact they can have as engineers, innovators, and leaders.
“Through this collaboration, members will take part in hands on civil engineering and infrastructure focused activities designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and inspire future career pathways”.
