RESIDENTS in parts of Amesbury are being urged to stay alert to rogue traders and doorstep scams after a major reassurance campaign.
Police visited more than 100 properties across Westland Close, Virginia Close, Vernon Close, Chesterfield Close and Purvis Close on Tuesday (June 2) amid concerns that doorstep crime tends to rise during the summer months.
PC Smith, PC Garrett and PCSO Douse joined Wiltshire Trading Standards to speak directly with homeowners, offering advice on how to avoid being pressured into costly and unnecessary work.
Police said rogue traders often target homeowners by knocking unexpectedly and claiming urgent repairs are needed to roofs, guttering, driveways, gardens or trees.
In some cases, residents are offered a “free survey” before being pressured into paying for expensive work that may not even be necessary.
People were warned not to agree to deals on the doorstep or feel rushed into making decisions.
Instead, police advise getting written quotes, researching companies carefully and using trusted accreditation schemes such as Buy With Confidence.
Homeowners are also being encouraged to avoid paying cash or handing over money upfront before work begins.
Officers said social media reviews alone should not be relied upon, and added to check insurance, qualifications and waste licences before hiring tradespeople.
Perhaps the clearest message was simple: if you are unsure about someone at your door, do not open it.
Police are also asking people to keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may be more likely to be targeted.
Concerns about suspicious callers or rogue traders can be reported to Trading Standards on 0808 223 1133, while emergencies should always be reported via 999.
