Police stop dozens of motorcyclists in summer safety crackdown

POLICE stopped almost 50 motorcyclists during a county-wide road safety operation aimed at reducing crashes ahead of the busy summer riding season.

Over the past two weeks, officers carried out 47 motorcycle stops as part of Operation Apex, speaking to riders about safety, road awareness and responsible riding.

While most encounters were positive, a small number of offences were identified and dealt with by officers.

Police said the operation was designed not only to enforce the law but also to engage directly with the motorcycling community at a time when more bikes are returning to the roads.

Roads Policing Unit Inspector Neil Duffin said officers had welcomed the opportunity to speak with riders and share advice.

“With more motorcyclists taking to Wiltshire’s roads over the coming weeks, we’re asking all road users to play their part in keeping everyone safe,” he said.

Drivers are being reminded to look carefully for motorcycles, particularly at junctions, roundabouts and when turning right – locations that continue to feature in a number of serious collisions involving riders.

Motorcyclists are also being encouraged to brush up on their skills through the national BikeSafe scheme, a police-led initiative that combines observed rides with expert advice and hazard awareness training.

Wiltshire Police said many of the roadside conversations during the operation were positive and good-humoured with officers and riders even debating whose bike was best.

As temperatures rise and roads become busier, police are urging everyone to remain alert and look out for one another.

The force said simple actions from both drivers and riders could help prevent collisions and save lives during the summer months.
