Salisbury Racecourse: preview and tips for Tuesday’s seven-race card

RACING returns to Salisbury Racecourse this week with a seven-race card on Tuesday afternoon, featuring a mixture of novice, handicap and maiden races.

The card gets underway at 2pm at the track and comes to a close at 5pm, with a handicap over six furlongs for three-year-old runners.

The first division of a six-furlong two-year-olds’ novice kicks off the afternoon (2pm).

Four debutants are introduced here, the best of which ought to turn out to be David Menusier’s Arctic Wind, who comes from a precocious family, but the yard aren’t necessarily associated with two-year-olds.

The bang in-form Lambourn handler Charlie Hills’ Too Darn Good offered some promise on debut at Bath over a furlong shorter in May, and up in trip today could improve.

Next is the second division of the race (2.30pm). Of those with a previous run, George Scott’s King Of Chaos has the most promising form, having run well on debut at Windsor for fourth of 10 with more to come.

Another who may be worth keeping an eye on is Eve Johnson-Houghton’s Zavateri, who has some smart relations and represents a yard doing well with their two-year-olds this year.

Our third race is a six-furlong handicap (3pm). Safari Dream seeks a hat-trick but has been raised sharply in the weights ahead of this, so it may pay to look elsewhere.

Beau Jardine appears to like this track and, with Luke Morris on board, could spring a surprise here from the bottom of the weights, but Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy’s useful and consistent Grenham Bay looks to have a better chance at this track, back off a break and returning to the turf after an all-weather campaign.

Race four is a seven-furlong novice for horses aged three and older (3.30pm). Paul and Oliver Cole’s yard is in excellent shape; therefore, their colt Dr Strangelove looks like the best option here in a first-time tongue strap.

The son of Mohaather won on debut and followed up with a close second next time and, though he is tried on turf for the first time here, can hold that form and improve.

John and Thady Gosden’s Competizione was well fancied on his last two runs and may oblige here for the formidable stable, looking to have the stronger turn of foot.

Following is a mile-and-a-half maiden for three-year-olds (4pm). With a pared-back field of only three runners, this still looks a reasonably tight contest between the best two, Marnier and Triple Gee, both of whom hail from powerhouse stables, however it could be expected that Marnier – especially equipped with first-time cheekpieces – will prevail.

The third runner, Bedford, has offered little encouragement in his two starts to date, but is bred to do better and might improve for the step up in trip.

The penultimate race is a mile and a quarter fillies’ handicap (4.30pm) with a well populated field of 12. Ollie Sangster’s Tempted is likely to attract some interest, having won last time out on the all-weather, but the little-exposed Crepe Suzette brings the strongest maiden company form for her handicap debut and should have a chance.

Drawn better for this race, though, is Club Class, who ran well for second over course and distance last time and whose running style suits the track nicely.

Finally, the afternoon concludes with a six-furlong three-year-olds’ handicap (5.05pm).

This isn’t an overly strong contest and could be pretty open, but Oldbury Lad ought to be at the sharp end on this occasion, having stayed on the same mark for his last three runs.

Dandy G Boy should have a solid chance, having dipped down a further pound in the handicap for this step back down in trip, and can improve on his seasonal reappearance.
