Thousands gather for stunning Summer Solstice sunrise

MORE than 20,000 people gathered at Stonehenge this weekend to celebrate the Summer Solstice with a stunning sunrise over the ancient monument creating an unforgettable atmosphere on the longest day of the year.

Thousands travelled from across the UK and beyond to witness the annual event, which saw crowds welcomed into the stone circle overnight before the sun rose above the misty Salisbury Plain to loud cheers and applause.

The magical moment was also shared with a global audience, with more than 180,000 people watching English Heritage’s livestreams of the sunset and sunrise online.

Georgia Butters, English Heritage’s head of Stonehenge, said: “There was a truly gorgeous sunrise at Stonehenge this year – and it was a really memorable occasion.

“Coming together at this iconic monument for the Summer Solstice is a tradition that brings people together from near and far. It was wonderful to see families and friends taking part in this joyous experience.”

Wiltshire Police described the event as a success, with the vast majority of visitors celebrating safely and responsibly.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of assault, while several drones were seized after a temporary restricted airspace was introduced around the World Heritage Site.

Chief Sup Guy Elkins said: “This year’s summer solstice was a safe and successful occasion, and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended, including our communities and the visitors to the site, who have enjoyed the event in the spirit in which it is held.

“We would also like to thank our partners and stakeholders, and of course the National Trust and English Heritage, for working with us. Collectively, we have ensured that everyone could enjoy the event peacefully.”

English Heritage also thanked its staff, volunteers and partner organisations for helping deliver the large-scale operation.
