Historic sleep-out to help homeless veterans

A LEADING Salisbury-based charity is set to make history with a powerful overnight event at one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks – all to support veterans facing homelessness.

ALABARÉ will host its flagship BIG Sleep at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday, June 26, marking the eve of Armed Forces Day.

Around 200 people will take part, gathering beneath the cathedral dome for a memorial event before sleeping out in the courtyard – a first for the world-famous venue.

The event aims to raise both awareness and vital funds to support veterans who have fallen into homelessness – an issue the charity says is reaching crisis levels.

Across the UK, nearly 4,800 people are now sleeping rough on any given night, with numbers rising for the fourth consecutive year.

ALABARÉ has been working to tackle that crisis, particularly among former military personnel.

Since opening its first veterans’ home in 2009, the charity has supported more than 2,000 veterans with housing, mental health care and employment support.

In the past year alone, more than half of those in its supported accommodation have moved on to independent living.

The scale and symbolism of the St Paul’s event is reflected in those taking part.

Among them will be the Lady Mayor of the City of London, Dame Susan Langley, along with senior civic figures – all swapping their beds for a night outdoors in solidarity.

The evening will also feature performances from a military band and a Military Wives Choir, highlighting the charity’s close links with the armed forces.

Chair of trustees Lieutenant General Andrew Gregory

Chair of trustees Lieutenant General Andrew Gregory said: “At ALABARÉ, we’re committed to providing homes, restoring hearts, and empowering minds and our work with veterans is a key element of that process to ensure no one is left behind and those who have served are supported in their transition to civilian life.

“Hosting the BIG Sleep at St Paul’s Cathedral on the eve of Armed Forces Day will be a special moment for those taking part to show their support for the military past and present – many of whom will be embarking on their own Armed Forces Day activities across the country.

“It’ll be a powerful night and a historic first, and we’d love supporters to join us on this important mission.”

Participants are asked to raise at least £500, with places limited.
