DIVISIVE plans to change bin collections to three-weekly have been approved.
Wiltshire councillors were told the move would deliver significant financial savings and environmental benefits at a Cabinet meeting yesterday (December 10).
From spring 2027 the council will introduce kerbside collection of flexible plastics and weekly food waste pick-ups.
Members also voted to adopt a booking system at household recycling centres (HRCs) as seen in neighbouring counties.
Both proposals were slammed by the Conservative opposition.
In a statement, Conservative spokesman for the environment Cllr Bridget Wayman said: “The Liberal Democrat administration is pushing ahead with changes to arrangements for waste management which will be hugely detrimental to Wiltshire residents and cost more money.”
She said HRC booking systems discriminated against working people – evidenced during Covid when weekend slots filled up quicky.
“Sadly, it is just another bureaucratic hoop for residents to jump through to dispose of their recycling – provided they’re computer savvy,” she added.
Wiltshire now joins 34 other local authorities in England which already operate three weekly waste collections and ten others due to adopt the system by mid-2026.
