City to mark nearly eight centuries since Royal Charter with weekend festivities

THE city centre is set to become a hive of activity this weekend as Salisbury comes together to celebrate the signing of the Royal Charter 799 years ago.

Festivities begin on Saturday (February 7) with the regular Charter Market running from 8.30am to 4pm in Market Place.

A children’s fun fair will also take place in Guildhall Square between 11am and 6pm, offering entertainment for the whole family.

Celebrations continue on Sunday (February 8) when, at 10.10am, the mayor of Salisbury, Cllr John Wells, will lead fellow city councillors and invited guests in a procession from Salisbury Guildhall to St Thomas’ Church.

The annual Charter Service will begin at 10.20am.

The Charter Market will return to the Market Place from 10am to 4pm, while the fun fair will remain open until 5pm.

The Royal Charter was granted in 1227 by King Henry III, elevating New Sarum to city status.

It confirmed the relocation of the cathedral from Sarisberie and established both the Charter Market and the annual Charter Fair, traditions which continue to play a prominent role in city life today.
