Cash boost offered for faster internet rollout

RESIDENTS and businesses across Wiltshire are being urged to act quickly to secure a share of government funding aimed at bringing lightning-fast broadband to communities.

The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, delivered by Building Digital UK (BDUK), is offering financial support to help eligible properties install Full Fibre broadband – but the scheme is only open until August, with no guarantee it will be extended.

The initiative is designed to help communities upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), a next-generation connection that promises significantly faster speeds, improved reliability and greater capacity for modern digital life.

For households, that could mean smoother streaming, better home working and stronger connections for smart devices.

For businesses, it offers a vital boost – supporting innovation, growth and day-to-day operations in an increasingly digital world.

But there is a catch: the scheme works best when neighbours team up.

Communities are encouraged to apply together, with at least three properties needed to unlock the full benefits.

Wiltshire Council is now calling on residents not to miss out.

Cabinet member for economic development, regeneration and assets, Cllr Helen Belcher, said: “Ensuring our communities have access to fast, reliable digital connectivity is essential for everyday life, from supporting local businesses to helping families stay connected.

“The Gigabit Voucher Schemes gives residents and businesses a real opportunity to secure future-proof Full Fibre broadband at a reduced cost.

“I encourage everyone who is eligible to get involved, speak with neighbours, and explore how joining together can bring these upgrades to your area. The scheme works best when three or more properties join together.”

With demand for high-speed internet continuing to rise, officials say the scheme represents a rare opportunity to future-proof homes and businesses – particularly in rural or harder-to-reach areas.

Residents can check if their property is eligible using the Gigabit Broadband Availability Checker, with further details available online.
