WILTSHIRE’S libraries are doing far more than lending books this month, with a packed programme of talks, workshops and family events taking place across the county.
From author evenings and creative writing sessions to local history talks and toddler mornings, libraries are throwing open their doors in a bid to bring communities together and encourage more people to make use of the free services on offer.
As part of the National Year of Reading, readers will get the chance to meet published authors through the Worlds Alive in Libraries tour.
Calne Library will host author Fiona Robertson on May 14, while Jacqueline Crooks will lead a creative writing session and author talk at Warminster Library on May 21.
History lovers are also being catered for during Local History Month, with events including a talk exploring the pubs of Warminster and a session in Devizes on Wiltshire Museum’s move to the Assizes building. Workshops using the British Newspaper Archive and reminiscence sessions are also planned.
Meanwhile, families with young children can join free Baby and Toddler mornings at libraries including Salisbury, Warminster, Chippenham, Devizes and Melksham.
The sessions will feature rhyme times, activities and support from local organisations, while free children’s books will also be available while stocks last.
Cabinet member for communities Cllr Mel Jacob said: “Libraries are at the heart of our communities, bringing people together and providing opportunities for people of all ages to learn, connect and take part in local life.
“This programme reflects the priorities we set out in Our Wiltshire Plan and the role our libraries play in supporting healthier lives, encouraging a love of reading from an early age, and making culture accessible to everyone across Wiltshire.”
