Ambulance service hit by busiest day ever as heatwave piles on pressure

SOUTH Western Ambulance Service has issued an urgent appeal for people to use 999 responsibly after experiencing the busiest day in its history.

Crews across the South West responded to more than 4,300 incidents yesterday after control rooms received over 5,200 emergency calls – the highest number ever recorded by the service.

The unprecedented demand comes as the region experiences soaring temperatures, with pressure expected to continue throughout the weekend.

Director of Operations Pete Brown said: “We want to be there for everyone who needs us in a life-threatening emergency; to do this, we need to have our ambulances free to respond to those most in need.

“If you call us and we’re not the right service for you, we will direct you to another part of the NHS – please listen to this advice, as it could mean you get the help you need faster.”

The ambulance service is urging residents and visitors to consider alternatives such as NHS 111, pharmacies or GP services where appropriate, helping ensure emergency crews remain available for those facing life-threatening situations.
