A baroque masterpiece comes to life in Salisbury Cathedral

MUSIC lovers in Salisbury are being invited to experience one of the great masterpieces of choral music when a leading regional choir performs in the city’s iconic cathedral this month.

Bournemouth Bach Choir will bring Vespers of 1610 to Salisbury Cathedral on Saturday (March 14) in what promises to be a spectacular evening of music inside one of the country’s most atmospheric venues.

Under the baton of music director Tim Hooper, the choir will perform the celebrated work by Claudio Monteverdi alongside soloists from the world-renowned ensemble The Sixteen.

They will also be joined by period instrument ensemble QuintEssential and the Bournemouth Symphony Youth Chorus.

Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 is widely regarded as one of the most important works of the early Baroque period.

Blending intimate moments of prayer with grand, dramatic choral passages, the piece combines rich vocal writing with virtuosic instrumental music in a powerful tribute to the Virgin Mary.

The work was originally published while Monteverdi was seeking new employment.

With its striking mix of traditional sacred styles and bold musical innovation, it effectively served as a showcase of his talents and ultimately helped him secure the prestigious role of maestro – music director – at St Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

The upcoming performance will give Salisbury audiences the rare chance to hear this monumental composition performed live in the vast and resonant space of the cathedral: a setting that promises to amplify both the drama and beauty of the music.

Organisers say the concert is suitable for seasoned classical fans and newcomers alike.
