SALISBURY will mark a key moment in its civic calendar as the city welcomes a new mayor – and residents are being invited to join a full day of celebrations in the city centre.
The historic Mayor Making ceremony on Saturday, May 9, will see the Mayoral Chain formally handed over from the outgoing mayor to the new civic head, becoming the 765th Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Salisbury.

The ceremony is open to the public, offering residents a rare chance to witness one of the city’s longest‑standing traditions first‑hand.
But the day is not just about formalities.
From 11am to 5pm, Guildhall Square will host a free, family‑friendly outdoor celebration, with craft workshops, street entertainment, live music and food stalls.
Salisbury Charter Market will also be trading as usual in the Market Place from 8.30am to 4pm, adding to the atmosphere.
A colourful civic procession will also pass through the city before the service, with visiting mayors, local dignitaries and invited guests walking from the Guildhall to St Thomas’s Church, accompanied by a brass fanfare from Verwood Concert Brass.

After the ceremony, the procession will return to the Guildhall shortly before 1pm.
Temporary road closures will be in place to allow the procession and events to take place safely.

Coming into Salisbury today has been a nightmare… The bus had to go round the bypass and the chaos where the buses had to drop people was ridiculous.
Surely a busy Saturday is not the time to close roads in the city centre for a Mayoral shindig …
Sunday would have been a better day.
Plus there was no available information on the bus about these alterations to service, or for city road closures.
