AS a heatwave hits Wiltshire, charity Alabaré is asking more people to spare a thought for the homeless.
Temperatures are set to climb across the UK this weekend with a yellow heat health alert in place until Sunday (June 22).
Hot weather can be just as dangerous as cold for people without proper shelter.
Tents, cars, sheds, and barns offer little protection, and finding shade, water, or a safe place to cool down can be incredibly tough.
An Alabaré spokesperson said: “Please lend your support for anyone who might be struggling. If you see someone who looks unwell, don’t assume they’re just sleeping or under the influence.
“Take a moment to check in and see if they need immediate help. A simple act of kindness could make all the difference.”
Alabaré services offering extra help
In Wiltshire, Alabaré provides water, sunscreen, and showers to rough sleepers visiting the Somewhere Safe to Go service at Alabaré Place in Salisbury and the Comfort Zone at Unity House in Chippenham.
Support can also be accessed from Wiltshire Council’s Housing Solutions team from offices in Trowbridge, Chippenham, and Salisbury, or by calling 0300 456 0106.
The national StreetLink website (https://thestreetlink.org.uk/) can also direct homeless people to local services to help them.
Naomi Webb, head of service for homelessness at Alabaré said: “There’s a real need for the community to look out for each other in the hot weather, and it’s no different for those who are homeless.
“A kind word to make sure someone’s OK, or even handing over a bottle of water, could make all the difference to someone who’s already vulnerable.
“Just small actions could save a life during the heatwave.”
