Extra financial help available for kinship carers in Wiltshire

FAMILIES across Wiltshire who have stepped in to raise children are being urged to come forward as part of a new scheme offering extra financial support.

Wiltshire Council has been chosen as one of just seven areas in the country to take part in a government pilot aimed at supporting kinship carers; relatives or family friends who take on the care of a child when their parents cannot.

The Kinship Allowance pilot, backed by the Department for Education, will test whether regular financial payments can help children remain within their wider family network rather than entering the care system.

For many carers, the role can come unexpectedly and without the same level of support available to foster carers.

The council is now carrying out targeted outreach to ensure those who may not realise they are eligible, including informal arrangements and Special Guardianship Order holders, are aware of the scheme.

Cabinet member for children’s services Cllr Jon Hubbard said: “Kinship carers play an extraordinary role in providing safe, loving homes for children who cannot live with their parents.

“Many take on this responsibility suddenly and without the same support that foster carers receive.

“We are proud that Wiltshire has been chosen to take part in this national pilot. It’s a chance to make a real difference for families and to learn what works so that support can be strengthened across the country.

“I would encourage anyone who is caring for a child within their wider family or friendship network, whether formally or informally, to come forward and find out whether this new allowance could help them.”
