Foal sighting sparks fresh warning for New Forest visitors

A HEART-MELTING photo of a newborn foal and its mother has prompted an important warning to visitors heading into the New Forest.

Sharing the image, New Forest Police said: “New arrival in the forest, possibly a few days old.

“When visiting the forest from all parts of Hampshire, it’s important to not to touch or feed the animals, they may act in an unpredictable way and can bolt or get defensive.”

While the scene may look idyllic, officials are reminding the public that these animals are not pets.

Concerns remain about people feeding and approaching animals despite years of warnings.

As well as to keeping all dogs under strict control, other rules include no feeding or petting of ponies and donkeys. Anyone caught can face a £100 fine, rising to £1,000 if prosecuted, according to Forestry England.

New Forest Police warn motorists to treat feral ponies with the same caution as ridden horses, particularly on roads where collisions can and do happen.

Police say if a vehicle hits a roaming animal, drivers must stop, check if the animal is safe and call 999, providing an accurate location. Failing to report it is a criminal offence.
