Hangar 3 café set to reopen following Old Sarum Airfield blaze

A CAFÉ that was devastated by a major blaze last week is set to reopen with a temporary kitchen.

A fire ripped through the Grade II listed Hangar 3 at Old Sarum Airfield last Thursday (April 17), which partially collapsed the hangar and destroyed the Hangar 3 Old Sarum café.

This comes after Old Sarum Airfield Ltd had plans approved on appeal to build 315 homes, a flying hub and leisure facilities at the site earlier this month.

The café, which announced it would be closed until further notice, has provided an update, telling customers that it plans to reopen “on a very reduced scale” tomorrow (April 25).

“We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the love and support from our amazing community over the past few days—thank you just doesn’t feel like enough,” a spokesperson said.

“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get back on our feet, and—fingers crossed—we’re hoping to be back in action (albeit on a very reduced scale) this Friday!!

“We’ve managed to source a temporary kitchen, but we’re now on the lookout for a few essentials: chopping boards, kitchen knives, and commercial-grade utensils.

“If you or someone you know might be able to donate or help us find any of these bits, we’d be so, so grateful.

“We’ll keep you updated as the week goes on, but for now—thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You’ve truly lifted us during such a tough time.”

An online fundraiser was set up by organisers at the Salisbury Bike Night, with money being raised to help set up a temporary kitchen to get the café back on its feet.

The fundraiser has so far raised £1,720.

The café thanked the bike club for setting up the fundraiser.

They said: “It’s something we never expected but are so incredibly thankful for.

“The kindness you’ve all shown has been nothing short of amazing.”

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said its investigations into the cause of the fire “are likely to carry on well into next week”.

Laverstock & Ford Parish Council are hoping the fire could result in a review of the decision to approve the hundreds of homes.

They say that as a condition of the planning permission was that the Grade II listed Hangar 3 would be restored back to its former glory, the fire which devastated the hangar has made this difficult.

However, historian Taff Gillingham claims the fire has “cleared all the dead wood away” and that after the area is tidied up and the walls repaired, it will be “ripe for restoration”.
