Red heat alert as county braces for 39C temperatures

WILTSHIRE is preparing for what could be the hottest days of the year so far after the Met Office issued a Red Extreme Heat Alert for Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures forecast to reach a scorching 39C.

The warning has prompted concerns for vulnerable residents, disruption to travel and the possibility of further school closures as the county swelters in the exceptional heat.

Some schools have already announced plans to close or finish early this week, with headteachers citing concerns over pupil and staff welfare as classroom temperatures continue to rise.

Wiltshire Council is urging residents to take precautions and keep a close eye on weather forecasts as conditions become increasingly challenging.

People are being advised to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, keep curtains closed in sun-facing rooms and drink plenty of water.

Officials are also urging residents to check on elderly neighbours, relatives and anyone who may struggle to stay cool or hydrated.

The council has issued a stark reminder never to leave children, older people or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short period, as temperatures inside cars can quickly become life-threatening.

Dog owners are also being urged to avoid walking pets during the day with advice to walk them only very early in the morning or late in the evening.

Motorists and rail passengers are being warned to carry water and prepare for possible travel disruption caused by the extreme temperatures.

Anyone seeking relief in rivers, lakes or other open water is also being reminded to take care and follow local safety advice.

Residents are encouraged to regularly check the Met Office forecast for updates.

Anyone needing non-emergency health advice can contact NHS 111 or speak to their local pharmacist.
