THE sustainability team at Salisbury Hospital has received a national award for the work they’ve done to reduce waste at the site.
This is the first time the team has won the Sustainability Award at the 2025 Health Estates & Facilities Management Association (HEFMA) Annual Awards.
The award celebrates innovation and impact in sustainable estates and facilities management.
The hospital’s Sustain & Reclaim Centre (formerly known as the Asset Recycling Centre) was celebrated as a leading example of how to reduce waste, reuse valuable resources, and embed sustainability into everyday operations.
The centre is staffed mainly by volunteers who work in innovative ways to prevent items from going to landfills.

By reusing and refurbishing furniture and non-medical equipment, they save the Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust money and support patient care.
Examples of the team’s work includes:
• Upholstering, restoring and repairing chairs, for staff and patient use
• Cleaning and refurbishing crutches
• Rehoming furniture and equipment, including drugs trolleys and examination couches
• Sending stoma/medical aid and crutches to charity partner 4Ukraine, to send to that country
Niall Prosser, chief operating officer, said: “This award is testament to the creativity and commitment of our Sustain & Reclaim Team and volunteers.
“Their work shows how practical innovation can make a real difference – for patients, for our staff, and for the environment. Can I thank the volunteers and the staff for continued commitment and excellent work.”
Gemma Heath, sustainability manager, said: “The Sustain & Reclaim Centre Team members are highly skilled, and are experts at creative solutions in giving new life to old furniture and equipment.
“It’s much better for our pockets and our planet to reuse what we’ve already got.”
