A SALISBURY man has been chosen to help shape the future of Bemerton as the area prepares to benefit from up to £20 million of regeneration funding.
Tom Belshaw has been appointed independent chair of the Pride in Place Salisbury Bemerton Community Board, which will oversee a decade-long programme of investment aimed at improving everyday life in the area.
The government-backed scheme could bring major investment into community facilities, public spaces, youth opportunities and neighbourhood projects, with local people expected to play a key role in deciding priorities.
Mr Belshaw, who has lived locally for nearly 15 years, brings experience in community development, governance and youth work.
He currently works for a Salisbury-based national charity and is also a trustee for two local youth charities.
The board will bring together residents, businesses, councillors, community groups and public sector organisations to create a shared ten-year vision for Bemerton.
Mr Belshaw described the appointment as a “real privilege”.
“I believe Bemerton has great strengths and assets – from its people to its spaces and places – and this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build on those good things,” he said.
“This investment in our community is not just about the next 10 years; done well, it can unlock other opportunities for decades to come.”
He added that his priority would be ensuring local residents remain at the centre of decision-making.
Wiltshire Council cabinet member for economic development, regeneration and assets Cllr Helen Belcher said she was “delighted” with the appointment, adding the funding would help build a “stronger and thriving Bemerton”.
Meanwhile, Salisbury’s Cllr Ricky Rogers said he looked forward to working with Mr Belshaw and residents to help shape the area’s future.
Applications are now open for people wanting to join the community board with residents encouraged to get involved before the June 24 deadline.
