Salisbury Musick Festival strikes up plans for 2026 return

SALISBURY’S celebration of baroque and early music is set to return this autumn and organisers have already given festival-goers a taste of what is to come.

Supporters gathered in the Medieval Hall on earlier this month for the official launch of the 2026 Salisbury Musick festival, which returns from October 2 to 4 for a three-day programme of concerts, talks and workshops inspired by the city’s rich musical past.

Guests at the launch enjoyed a performance of works by Bach for solo cello by musician Jacob Garside, offering an early glimpse into the atmosphere organisers hope to recreate when the festival returns later this year.

The new mayor of Salisbury, Cllr Jenny Bolwell, also attended to hear more about the plans for the second edition of the festival.

Inspired by Salisbury’s famous 18th-century music festivals, once among the most prominent in the country, Salisbury Musick blends historically informed performances with modern additions including educational talks and workshops.

The festival takes its name from the original group of local musicians – the “Salisbury Musick” orchestra – retaining the distinctive 18th-century spelling.

Founded by four Salisbury musicians, the event aims to revive the city’s historic musical tradition for modern audiences, with performances taking place over three days.

A major highlight will be a closing performance of Handel’s Messiah, featuring local performers The Farrant Singers and Salisbury Baroque, led by Alice Poppleton and conducted by Philip Lawson.

The festival will also include afternoon talks. On Friday, October 2, Nigel Wyatt will explore the history of early performances of Messiah in Salisbury, while festival patron Margaret Faultless will discuss the development of the violin bow and how instrument design shaped music.

Young people will also be involved with workshops planned at Salisbury Area Young Musicians and local schools.
