Salisbury rally to challenge fire station cuts

A RALLY against controversial plans to close four Wiltshire fire stations is set to take place in Salisbury next month.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is calling on firefighters, emergency workers, residents and community groups from across Dorset and Wiltshire to gather in the city on June 30 to protest proposed cuts to Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The location and time of the rally are still to be confirmed, but organisers said the event will send a clear message that “public safety should come before cuts”.

The protest comes amid growing opposition to proposals that could see fire stations in Wilton, Mere, Ramsbury and Bradford-on-Avon shut as part of a major cost-saving review.

Last week, Wiltshire Council overwhelmingly backed a motion opposing the closures, with councillors voting 87 in favour, none against and three abstentions.

Council leader Cllr Ian Thorn told members that “every second and every minute matters” when it comes to emergency response times and pledged his support for efforts to fight the plans.

The fire service has argued it faces serious financial pressures and said changes are needed to create a more sustainable model.

However, campaigners fear longer response times could put lives at risk, particularly in rural communities.

In a statement announcing the rally, the FBU said: “This rally is for everyone who believes that public safety should come before cuts.

“Whether you’re directly affected by the proposed cuts or simply want to support your local fire service, your voice matters.”

The results of the consultation into the proposed closures are due on June 30.
